Vegetable season is different here in Florida than other parts of the country. Careful attention must be paid to planting dates to get the best harvest from your garden.

Spring in Central Florida is February through May. This is the time for tomatoes, watermelon, and corn. Make sure you plant after the threat of frost but allow enough time for plants to mature before the summer heat kicks in.

Summer runs from June through September. You can grow okra, southern peas (black-eyed, crowder), Jacob's Cattle beans, lima beans, climbing beans, long beans, Seminole pumpkin, long squash, and cherry tomatoes. Protecting plants from the afternoon sun is key to success during this time.

Fall and Winter, October through mid February, are the best time of year to grow leafy greens. This is also the time of year for other cool-season vegetables like broccoli, celery, onions, and cauliflower. Make sure your vegetable garden gets plenty of sun. This may be a different area of the garden than where your summer plants thrive.
