Sycamore, Platanus occidentalis, is a large deciduous tree, growing quickly to 75 feet or more. The leaves are distinctively large at 8 to 10 inches across. They turn amber in the late summer or early fall, then brown, eventually dropping on a graduated basis into the early winter. The shape is pyramidal in early years and spreading as it gets older. Plant this tree in locations that are average to wet and where the extra large leaves are not a nuisance when they drop. The tree is otherwise a good shade tree and displays an interesting ornamental character with its peeling bark. Seeds of Sycamore are used by finches and Juncos as well as small mammals.
