Simpson's Stopper
Myrcianthes fragrans is a shrub or small tree growing 8-20 ft. It requires full sun to light shade and average to dry soil. The small, spidery flowers are fragrant during the spring and early summer. The flowers attract a diversity of pollinators including butterflies. The showy orange-red fruit is edible for people and attractive to birds.
This shrub can be used as an accent or specimen shrub or small tree. It is wonderful for along walkways because of the fragrant leaves and flowers. Can be used as a formal hedge in place of boxwood, ligustrum, or podocarpus. It takes well to pruning so size can be kept in check.
