Diospyros virginiana is a native, long-lived deciduous tree. Fast growing up to 35-60ft tall. Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist to very dry soils. It hosts many moth species and small mammals love to eat the fruit. Fruit is edible when ripe. Native Americans used the fruits to make bread, and also used them dried. Cooking oil can be extracted from the seeds.
