Ocala Yellow Anise, Illicium parviflorum, is a large evergreen shrub that naturally occurs in 7 counties in Florida from central Florida to north central Florida. It is a widely utilized shrub in landscape and is popular for it's attractive elliptic, leathery and aromatic foliage. Yellow or Ocala Anise is a broad rounded shrub that can reach 10 to 15 feet in height and a spread to 10 feet. This plant insists on moist, acidic, and well drained organic soil. It must be in shade to semi-shade. The small greenish flowers do not add ornament to the otherwise appealing plant. Leaves and fruit are toxic, so care should be given to placement, but just the same, this is a very attractive landscape plant that deserves wider use.
