Marlberry
Marlberry, Ardisia escallonioides, is a very rich, ornamental, native shrub or small tree that comes from coastal uplands. It has dark, leathery green leaves that gives this plant a luxuriant look. The showy and fragrant small white flowers are produced in dense panicles displayed clearly on the branch tips. These are followed by dark clusters of fruit attractive to birds, also well displayed on the branch tips. The plant is an upright shape with a 5 to 6 foot spread and growing 12 to 18 feet tall. This is a non-aggressive grower that is reasonable to maintain at 8 feet or less. This is a favorite native for shade or partial sun in moist, well drained soil. Tolerates salt air, but not heavy frost.
