Herbs are an excellent addition to a garden. In addition to adding flavor to your kitchen, they are beneficial for pollinators. They work very well in containers but also make great accent or border plants in the garden. Most herbs need some organic matter added to the natural soil. Be careful to keep the soil well-draining so they do not get water logged.

Florida's warm climate is perfect for growing perennial herbs year-round. Perennial herbs that grow well in Florida's heat include Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Chives, and Lemongrass. Mints also grow well here but spread aggressively so are best used in containers.

Annual herbs include Dill, Lemon Balm, Basil, and Parsley. These plants grow best in the cool season, starting in fall.

Some Mediterranean herbs, including lavender, don't like our wet summers so they may act more like annuals. The key is to provide as much sun as possible, well-draining soil with low organic content, and to allow them to dry completely between waterings.

You can shop for Southern Exposure herb seeds here.
