Florida Peperomia (P. obtusifolia)
Florida Peperomia, Peperomia obtusifolia, also known as Baby Rubber Plant, is a perennial that is about 6-9 inches in height. Spreading and forming a low cover. It is an epiphytic herb with thick, succulent stems and leaves 2-3 inches long. Even though it occurs as an epiphytic plant in the wild, it can be bedded in the ground as a shade loving ground cover or grown as a container plant. It is commonly seen as a house plant. It is very ornamental as a ground cover but will not tolerate sun and needs average to moist conditions and in should be located in frost sheltered locations. Florida populations are superior over plants from outside of Florida (foliage or house plant market) for durability in the landscape.
Now available in limited quantities: Variegated Florida Peperomia. This variety is from a native population. It has tri-colored leaves with some pink on the stems.
