Dwarf Palmetto
Bluestem or Dwarf Palmetto, Sabal minor, is a 4-6 ft. tall fan palm in Florida, occasionally reaching tree size in Texas. Usually stemless, the palmate leaves arising from an underground stock. White blooms are followed by black fruit about 1/2 inch wide in long clusters. Although this palm naturally occurs in moist understory in the wild, it is very adaptable and easy to establish in harsh, dry and sunny locations as well as in shaded and moist settings. This palmetto is more user friendly for most suburban landscapes than the comparable Saw Palmetto. Bluestem is not only a typically small palm, but it does not have the spines of Saw Palmetto. This species like all native palms has very valuable pollinator and wildlife benefits.
Salt inundation tolerant.
