Christmasberry, Lycium carolinianum, is an open plant with small and narrow gray-green leaves. The plant will grow up to 9 feet with long, graceful arching, spiny branches. The four-petaled, somewhat tubular, delicate lavender flowers usually occur singly and are followed by fleshy, showy red berries. Pollinators are attracted to the flowers in spring and early summer and songbirds love the attractive berries later in the fall. This plant grows in occasionally salt water inundated soils, but is adaptable to average conditions in full sun. This is a coastal plant highly tolerant of salt that can be used as an accent or specimen plant.
