Chickasaw Plum, Prunus angustifolia, reaches between 16-20 ft. tall. It is a small deciduous tree with showy, lightly fragrant white flowers in flat topped clusters during February and March. The tart plum is produced in late spring and early summer and can be eaten fresh, but are usually made into jellies and preserves. Chickasaw grows quickly and suckers into thickets unless kept mowed or pruned. Flatwoods Plum, Prunus umbellata, may be an alternate to Chickasaw Plum to reduce potential for suckering. Plant in full to partial sun and well drained soil. Plums are attractive to butterflies (flowers) and birds (fruit).
