American Wisteria, Wisteria frutescens, is a native species distinct from the Asian species. American Wisteria grows much smaller than the Asian species hence the sometimes used name, Dwarf Wisteria. The fragrant lavender blooms are produced against the foliage after winter dormancy breaks in the spring making a more striking appearance than the Asian Wisterias. The bloom clusters are up to 9 inches long and the vine up to about 30 feet in length. The is no reason to use the Asian species when our native Wisteria is a superior plant!
