Edible Fig, Ficus carica are fruiting plants native to the Mediterranean. They typically grow up to 8'-15' tall in Florida, though there are smaller growing varieties. These figs are parthenocarpic, meaning that the fruits form without fertilization. Typically the fruits ripen in July and October and their size and taste varies according to the variety. Most recommended varieties for Florida are 'Celeste', 'Brown Turkey', and 'Ischia'.
Varieties:
Chicago Hardy: Produces small, brown to purple figs with a beautiful red interior. Drought tolerant once established. Fruit ripens late summer to fall. Self pollinating. 1-2 years to bear fruit. Plant in part to full sun. Prefers slightly acidic soils. Eventually reaches 15-30 feet high and wide.
LSU Purple: The fruit is up to 2.5 inches long with dark purple glossy skin and high sugar content. Will grow to between 8 and 10 feet tall and wide.
Green Ischia: Grows 6'-10' tall. Productive yellow/green -skinned fig. Great flavor and well-suited for warm climates.Texas Everbearing: Gets about 10′ x 10′. Practically seedless fruit.Celeste: Grows 8'-10' tall. One of the recommended varieties for Florida. Good cold, disease and pest tolerance.Little Miss Figgy: Compact growing form, 4'-6' tall. Good cold tolerance.
Brown Turkey: Larger growing variety, up to 15'-20'. Vigorous growing, great choice for larger plant in Florida.
Black Mission: Larger variety, 10'-15' tall. Uniquely-sweet taste and incredible texture with dark-purple skin.
