Southern Magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora 'D.D. Blanchard', is a cultivar of Southern Magnolia that grows to 50 feet or more, with a oval crown. This cultivar originated in North Carolina. Like most Southern Magnolias, it has large leathery leaves, but this cultivar has extra dark leaves with attractive brown hairs on the underside that gives an extra richness and ornamentation to the tree. 'D.D.Blanchard' is known for its large 8 inch highly fragrant white flowers that attract pollinators. The cone like seedpods that contain large red seeds is very attractive to songbirds. It is a popular ornamental and shade tree that is commanding with its rich features.
