Azalea
Evergreen Azaleas (Rhododendron sp.) are very well-known for their brilliant displays of color they have in the spring. They vary in height based on variety, but they are adaptable to our well drained soil, however amending with organic material may be recommended. Acidic soil also keeps Azaleas happy and blooming, so supplementation of those nutrients is recommended. Azaleas grow best in filtered light, so planting in areas underneath trees or with dappled light are common. They make an incredible addition of seasonal color to any landscape, and the varieties in detail are covered below:
Red Formosa: Full size cultivar; up to 8' tall and wide. Can be pruned to 4'. Bright red flowers.
Lavender Formosa: Full size cultivar; up to 8' tall and wide. Can be pruned to 4'. Lavender / fuchsia flowers with pink blotches.
Fashion: Medium-sized cultivar that reaches 5-6 feet high and wide. It has salmon-colored (orange-red) blooms.
Red Ruffles: Dwarf cultivar, 2'-4' tall and wide, dark red flowers with frilled petals.
G.G. Gerbing: Full size cultivar; up to 8' tall and wide. Can be pruned to 4'. Stark white flowers.
George L Taber: Full size cultivar; up to 8' tall and wide. Can be pruned to 4'. White & pink orchid-style flowers.
