Landscape design

What does a typical residential landscape design cost?

The base price for a computer-generated 2D design of a softscape for a small yard or courtyard (under 1,000 sq ft) is $395. The average cost for most designs is around $650. However, the final cost is influenced by several factors, including the size and type of property, the precision of the site survey, the intricacy of the design, existing features, and hardscapes. These factors can increase the time required for designing, leading to higher costs. For those interested in 3D designs, the minimum cost is $1500, and these designs are subject to availability and backlog.

How much does a new landscape cost?

Our landscape installations typically cost around $6 per square foot, but can range from $3/sf to $15/sf depending on plant sizes and site preparation. The cost per square foot will increase when hardscapes, lighting, and irrigation/drainage are included. This estimate only accounts for softscapes. Wilcox designers will work with you every step of the way.

How long will my design take?

The duration of the design process is influenced by the season. It can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks. During the busier Spring and Summer seasons, the wait time may be longer, while Fall and Winter typically have quicker turnaround times. As this is a creative process, it’s important to allow adequate time for the designer to fully understand and incorporate your wants and needs into the design.

How quickly can you install my landscape?

After you approve your estimate, we can typically begin your project within 4-6 weeks. Please note that turnaround time can vary by season, with spring and summer being the busiest. Our focus on native plants means that we work with suppliers who may be located farther away, so it can take more time to source your specific plant material.

What is your process and how long does it take?

The design process begins when you submit a request, and one of our designers contacts you to arrange an on-site consultation ($125, applied to design fee). During the consultation, we gather site information and discuss the scope of work for your project. Your designer then creates a design, including an estimate, and meets with you at our nursery to review it and view some of the plant material. Once you approve the design, we schedule the installation and begin work on your property. Your designer will be with you every step of the way to inspect quality, make adjustments, or solve problems. When the project is complete, your designer will walk through it with you and collect final payment. The entire process typically takes 6-12 weeks.

I already have a design, do you provide free estimates for this?

Yes, we are usually happy to provide a bid for projects that have already been designed. Occasionally, we may suggest alternative plants that align better with our mission of promoting native species. However, if the design is particularly complex, it might require a consultation or fall outside our usual scope of work, in which case we may be unable to provide an estimate.

What kind of maintenance can I expect?

Wilcox Nursery’s New Landscape Maintenance program is designed to address the critical first year of a new landscape. Soil disruption during installation and watering during establishment will inevitably lead to weed growth, which, along with monitoring water needs, are the primary maintenance concerns. Neglecting these factors can result in landscape failure. Our program includes bi-monthly visits from April to October and monthly visits from November to March to ensure your landscape thrives. Remember, weed control is vital for a successful landscape!

Some of my plants don’t look good, what should I do?

We’re happy to answer any questions you may have about your plants. Since plants can’t verbally communicate with us, we may need to do some troubleshooting to identify any issues. This process may involve some trial and error, which can occasionally lead to plant replacement or the selection of a more suitable species for the location. But oftentimes, a simple cultural change like increasing or decreasing water can solve the issue.

What happens if some of my plants die?

Even the most experienced gardeners have failures. That’s why we offer several warranty options for your landscape, if you meet certain requirements. Our most basic warranty offers a one-time replacement at 50% off within two years of purchase.

Do I need an irrigation system?

A new landscape, even one comprised of native plants, requires substantial watering to become established. While not mandatory, this is necessary for optimal warranty coverage. Though native plants are ultimately resilient and well-suited to Florida’s weather, they need time and ample water to develop a strong root system. To support this, you’ll receive a watering schedule when your landscape is complete.

My designer has let me know a plant is not available, what happened?

Due to the emerging nature of the native plant industry in Florida, availability can fluctuate. Plants that were readily available locally may become temporarily unavailable and could take time to re-emerge in the market or necessitate sourcing from more distant locations, potentially incurring additional freight costs. In such cases, your designer will suggest alternative options or recommend waiting until the desired plant becomes locally available again. Rest assured, our designers prioritize your best interests and will work diligently to find the most suitable solution.

How does the design and consultation credit work?

We offer a one-time credit of up to $500 applied to your invoice, equivalent to the amount you paid for your consultation or design fees. To be eligible, approved landscape installation estimates must exceed $5000. This is our way of showing appreciation to clients who continue to work with us through the installation phase of their project.
